Miaoli Oolong Tea

Miaoli Tea Region Miaoli County Elevation 350 m
Returning SweetnessFloral

Flavour

Delicate aroma, mellow and sweet

Miaoli's gardens are scattered across the hills of Toufen, Sanwan, Nanzhuang, Tongluo and Dahu, mostly between three and four hundred metres.

Growers here plant Qingxin Oolong and Sijichun side by side: one carries quality as a light oolong, the other carries volume at five or six pickings a year. Two varieties in one garden is a smallholder spreading risk.

Miaoli is better known for Pengfeng tea; the light oolong keeps a lower profile and costs a great deal less.

If you are starting out with Taiwanese oolong, this is the cheapest place to be wrong. Build your own baseline here, then go and compare the mountains against it.

May I taste it first?

If they will not let you taste but want you to buy 600 g of something expensive, walk away. It is the simplest and most effective filter there is.

Is there a traceability record or QR code?

Brewing

Why this temperature

Ball-rolled oolong is tightly wound, and the first pour only reaches the outside of the pellet, so it needs water close to boiling to open at all. If it does not open, the later steeps swing between thin and heavy. The first and second steeps often take the same time or less, because the leaf does not truly unfurl until the second.

Common mistakes with this tea

Use hot enough water

95°C or above. Too cool and the roast aroma never opens, leaving it flat.

A longer first infusion is normal

Rolled-ball leaf needs the first infusion to open up; the second is then shorter.

Seal it and keep it dark

Best drunk within two months.

Start with 30–75 g

The most common beginner regret is buying 600 g on the first try. Buy a jin only after you know you like it.

What to eat with it

Tangyuan Rice Balls冬至・元宵Essential at the winter solstice and Lantern Festival. Sesame or peanut inside a soft glutinous skin — a symbol of the family gathered whole.
Longan Rice Cake冬Glutinous rice steamed with dried longan and rice wine — warming, deeply aromatic. The sweet side of Taiwan’s winter tonic tradition.

Glutinous rice clings and the sweetness lingers on the tongue. A tea with some astringency clears it away.
